Before & After School
Our school provides supervision for students arriving before school from 8.15am. Student should not arrive at school before this time.
Between 8.15-8.30am, students should go to the school library. From 8.30am, students are supervised in the quadrangle and may engage in small ball games. To ensure student safety, students are not permitted in the playground before school.
Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students may wait outside the classrooms near the P&C Hall with a parent/carer.
The school days ends at 3.05pm. If going home, students should be collected and/or exit the grounds promptly. Families are welcome to stay on the school grounds after 3.05pm, with parents/carers providing direct supervision.
No student should be on the school grounds before or after school without direct supervision.
To help support safety, students and families are also reminded that bikes and scooters are not to be used on the school grounds.
Composite Classes
A composite class contains students from more than one year level. They are commonly used across primary schools, and this year, our school has two composite classes. Industrial requirements limit the number of students which may be allocated to a classroom, and composite classes are the practical response when enrolment numbers in year level do not “fit” within these requirements.
Considerable time and care are taken when creating classes, with staff using their professional knowledge of the students to ensure each class provides the best climate for social, emotional and academic learning within the resources of the school.
Research has shown that composite classes have no negative impact on academic achievement. Rather, that students can become more confident and assertive in their learning, build both independent and collaborative learning skills, and develop wider social networks and connection to the school.
Teachers in all classrooms are skilled in differentiating curriculum delivery. In every class, including single year level classes, there is a significant range of students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities across all learning areas. Teachers are adept at building learning opportunities, based on the WA curriculum, across multiple year levels. Teachers can provide families information on specific structures used within their classroom to ensure full access to teaching and learning.
All students within a year level continue to have opportunities to interact through shared learning programs, extra-curricular activities, and recess/lunchtimes.
Whether a child is in a composite or a single year level class at Como PS, families can be assured that each child is in the best possible position as we achieve ONLY OUR BEST.
