Celebrating Term One

We have reached the end of a busy ten weeks for our school. In addition to the teaching and learning, the school has undertaken a range of events and initiatives. These included:

• Harmony Day
• Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse Incursion
• Prefect Fundraiser

Thank you to all in our school community – students, staff and families – for their efforts in ensuring Term 1 was a successful term. All the extras that enrich and enhance our school only happen due to the commitment of our school community to give that little bit more.

We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday period. We look forward to seeing you all for the start of Term 2 on Tuesday 29 April.

Visual Art

In Visual Art this week Room 5 sketched, painted and decorated Easter Bunnies. Students were given a range of paint colours and materials to choose from. Well done Room 5 on your beautiful artwork. These are currently on display in Room 5.

Reports Home Today

Interim reports will be sent home today with all Year 1-6 students. These reports provide a brief snapshot of how your child has commenced their learning this year.

On-Entry Parent Summaries will be sent home today with Pre-Primary students. These provide an overview on your child’s responses to questions and tasks completed during the On-Entry assessments. Ideas about how parents might help and support their child at home are also included.

ANZAC Service

Our annual ANZAC Service will be held tomorrow, April 11^th in our hall, starting at 8:50am. This is a very solemn and respectful service, run by our students. A representative from the Victoria Park/South Perth RSL will be present, the senior choir will perform and wreaths will be laid. Parents are welcome to attend but we ask, as a mark of respect, that there be no clapping during the service

Prefect Fundraiser – Easter Raffle

Thank you to all who participated in the Prefect Fundraiser Easter Raffle. A total of $1191.85 was raised!

Term 2 Staffing

Mrs Louisa Jones will be Deputy Principal next term while Mrs Herne is enjoying a well-earned period of long service leave. We welcome Mrs Alyssa Curtayne to the staff who will joining Room 14.

School Dental Service

Every year, Dental Health Services (DHS) offers parents and carers the chance to register their child for free dental care at the School Dental Service. The offer is open to every student from the year they turn 5 until their 17^th birthday and includes check-ups, filings and simple extractions.

Coming home today, with students who have not been previously enrolled, will be an envelope with an enrolment form, Frequently Asked Questions, and reply-paid envelope from DHS. Just fill in the enrolment form, pop it into the reply-paid envelope, and put it in your nearest post box.

Once DHS receives your form, they will register your child and arrange for you to receive and appointment in the mail.

Como Swimmers Shine at the SSWA Gold Division Carnival

On Tuesday 8 April, the Como Primary School Swimming Team made a big splash at the prestigious School Sport WA Gold Division Carnival, held at the HPC Centre in Perth. Competing against top-tier schools like Subiaco PS, Wembley PS, and Floreat Park PS, our students showed outstanding determination, sportsmanship, and school pride.

Now in only our second year at this elite level, our swimmers rose to the challenge. The day kicked off with four high-energy Freestyle divisions, followed by two demanding Breaststroke races. A special shout-out to Year 3 stars Vivienne and Zayn, who held their own as some of the youngest in the competition—what an achievement!

Year 4 swimmer Thea got off to a flying start, earning a 3rd and 1st place in her opening events. The excitement continued with the Medley Relays, where our fastest swimmers combined their talents in backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle.

For some competitors, like Year 5’s Lachy, the medleys were only the halfway point of a busy five-event schedule! His grit and endurance were mirrored by the dedication of every swimmer who gave it their all for Como.

The backstroke events had some tough competitors. Congratulations to Sean (Year 4), Angus and Emelia (Year 5), and Neve and Kseniya (Year 6), who all swam their hardest in a tightly contested field. The carnival finished with a huge effort in the 4 x 50m Freestyle relay, with each age division giving it their all.

At the end of the day, the points were tallied for schools and individual events. Congratulations to Thea P who won the overall Year 4 Girls Individual Champion! A huge accomplishment alongside incredibly competitive schools.

A big congratulations and thank you to all competitors, staff and students who have supported us along the way. Again, a massive thank you to Chris Twomey for facilitating the House Carnival and Interschool training sessions.

Undescended testes

Screening for undescended testes is recommended for boys at school entry (~4-5 years of age). Around 2-4% of boys have an undescended testes at birth. But sometimes the testes (also known as testicle) is in the scrotum at birth but is pulled up into the groin or abdomen at around 4-10 years of age. This happens because the cord that attaches the testicle to the abdomen doesn’t grow at the same rate as the child.

Undescended testes don’t fully sit within the scrotum. The condition isn’t painful but can increase the risk of several other health issues such as decreased fertility and testicular cancer. For those boys who develop an undescended testicle later in childhood, the 'ascending' testicle often needs surgery between 5 years and 10 years.

Colour Blindness

Children who are colour blind can see as clearly as other people but can’t tell the difference between some colours or see colours differently from other people. Very few people who are colour blind are ‘blind’ to all colours – most often they see red and green as very similar.

It’s good to know if a child is colour blind because they may have difficulty at school with activities that use colours, such as drawing and sorting blocks, and with computers. Please read through information on colour blindness provided by Raising Children Network.

If you have any concerns, colour vision testing can be performed by some General Practitioners (GP), eye specialists or optometrist. You can also contact your local Community Health Nurse, (Kerry Martin)   on (0424 574 272).

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It can be detected by a simple examination of the back.

The normal spine has three curves – one in the neck, on in the upper back and one in the lower back. These curves can be seen from the side, but when you look from behind the spine should appear straight. If the spine has a sideways curve, this is scoliosis.

SPLASH & DASH - TOMORROW WE RUN!

As no doubt you are aware tomorrow is the Splash & Dash Run event. You would have received an information letter in your child’s communication folder and via Connect and via the Class Rep WhatsApp groups earlier this week. Please ensure that you read this important notice to understand how the event will run.

Also note:

Tomorrow your child does have to wear a school uniform to school for the ANZAC Day service. They will have the opportunity to change into their white shirt and older running shoes throughout the day.

If you do take any photos or video footage of the event please remember that if children other than yours feature in the footage then the photos/videos are for personal use only and are not to be used on social media.

I currently have 8 pea straw bales of hay that the P&C will want to on sell after the event. If you have the need for some straw in your garden SMS me asap and you can pick them up from the school oval after 3pm tomorrow. Cost $21 each.

Every child is super excited for the event and I am very much looking forward to it. Start time 2pm tomorrow on the school oval for Kindy / PP. The older children will commence at 2.20pm.

SAYING GOODBYE TO HEATHER MITCHELL

After more than 9 years of consistent help in the uniform shop we are sadly saying goodbye to Heather Mitchell. To thank her for her reliable support and volunteering we are taking donations of any amount to go towards a gift to show our appreciation. Perth Goju Karate

Perth Goju Karate teaches karate classes at Como Primary School, in the school hall.
