Phillip Pendal Young Heritage Award Finalists

Congratulations to William B, Sakeenah A, and Heidi G, who were finalists in the Phillip Pendal Young Heritage Award presentations, held last Saturday afternoon at Heritage House. This award recognises young people who show a passion for preserving and promoting our local history through photography and writing.

Each student’s work was of an exceptionally high standard, covering topics such as the sculpture of a white rhinoceros at Mends Street, Perth Zoo, and Mindeerup. Their creativity and research highlighted the importance of celebrating local stories and landmarks.

Published copies of the finalists’ work will be on display at Heritage House on Mill Point Road, South Perth, for the next two months. We are very proud of William, Sakeenah, and Heidi for their achievements and thank Mrs Ward for her promotion and support of this competition.

Art Club

At our lunchtime Art Club, Year 1 and 2 students have been creating magical fairy and gnome houses using their paper sculpture skills. They’ve done an amazing job! Next week, the magic continues as they sculpt their very own clay fairies and gnomes to bring their creations to life.

House Athletics Carnival

Due to the current weather forecast for this Friday, which predicts up to 35mm of rain and the possibility of a thunderstorm, we have decided to postpone our Annual House Athletics Carnival.

The carnival will now be held on Friday, 12 September.

Planning for 2026

As we prepare for next year, it is important for us to know our expected student numbers. If your family circumstances change and you will be moving house and your child will not be attending Como Primary School in 2026, please contact the school office as soon as possible.

Mobile Phones and Smart Watches

We remind families that mobile phones and smart watches are not permitted to be used during the school day. This is a Department of Education policy.

If parents need to contact their child during school hours, please phone the school’s front office and a message will be passed on.

Students who bring a phone or smart watch for use when travelling to and from school must hand the device to their classroom teacher at the beginning of the day for safe keeping. Devices will be returned at the end of the school day.

Congratulations to the following children on receiving Honour Certificates at last week’s assembly:

Day 1 of the 2025 Como House Athletics Carnival was a great success, with students from Years 1–6 competing in the Long Jump and Throw events. There were many impressive performances, with students striving to earn valuable championship points towards becoming their year-level champion.

The 400m events, held on Tuesday 2nd September, were another highlight, with students demonstrating determination, resilience, and effort as they sprinted, paced, and pushed themselves to the finish line.

With Day 2 of the House Carnival rescheduled to Friday 12 September (Week 8), successful competitors will move straight into the Interschool Carnival on Friday 19 September (Week 9). Due to recent weather conditions, all schools within the SMPSSA association have had to make adjustments to their carnival dates, resulting in a shorter turnaround leading into the combined interschool competition. Despite the quick transition, we are looking forward to the challenge and are confident our students will be well prepared.

A big thank you to all the parents who have already come along to support their children—it has been wonderful to see such a strong turnout from our school community.

SPORTS CARNIVAL BAKE SALE - GET YOUR APRON ON!

Margie Farren and the P&C will be running a bake sale at next weeks sports carnival and WE NEED YOU to bake or donate goods to sell. The children will have the opportunity to purchase baked goods so give them some spare change for the day.

Drop off all goods to the canteen next Thursday after school pickup or Friday morning.

P&C MEETING NEXT WEEK

With Term 3 coming to a close we will be having our next P&C Meeting on Wednesday 10^th September in the Staff Room starting at 7pm. All school parents are invited to attend and help us decide on everything P&C. If you would like to attend this meeting and it will be your first time, please let me know. Hope to see you there!
